What do Sounds-Write lessons look like?

Lesson scripts

Each phonics session is made up of bite-sized Sounds-Write Lessons. These have been carefully designed to make introducing and practising phonics skills and knowledge clear and simple for educators. The lesson scripts provide everything you need for confident, consistent delivery—guiding you through each activity step by step.

Scope and sequence

Our scope and sequence takes children from the first introduction to sounds and spellings in the Early Years all the way through to reading and spelling complex polysyllabic words in Key Stage 2 and beyond. Fine-tuned through more than 20 years of use in classrooms, the sequence is cumulative, clear and can adapt to the needs of all learners. Each unit of our scope and sequence comes with an array of resources including word lists, decodable readers and phonics games and activities to support your planning.

Planning

Sounds-Write phonics sessions consist of two or three Sounds-Write scripted lessons. Each lesson will target a different sound, spelling or phonics skill, to ensure that your phonics sessions are varied, well-paced and comprehensive—moving students forward and continuously reinforcing what they already know.

Our three steps to success

Every Sounds-Write session is made up of three parts, ensuring that recapping, progressing, reading and spelling are happening in every phonics lesson.

Review

This is your opportunity to go over previously-taught sounds and spellings. Regularly reviewing past content helps to transfer it to students’ long-term memory and build strong foundations for future learning.

Current Unit

In this section, you will introduce each new unit of learning explicitly and systematically, using a range of activities to build students’ secure knowledge of sounds and their corresponding spellings.

Reading and Writing in Connected Text

Every Sounds-Write session includes either reading or writing longer texts. This section supports students in gaining fluency and confidence in reading and writing longer passages.

Great lessons start with great pedagogy

Sounds-Write’s theoretical framework is based on decades of research in cognitive and developmental psychology. The programme is designed to bring this research into the classroom in a practical and engaging way that ensures your teaching is pedagogically sound.
